Attractive Goc Beach-Bai Goc

Bai Goc is located in the North of Dien Cape and Tien Beach, belonging to Hoa Tam commune (Dong Hoa district).

In the morning, when the sun brightly shines the very first sun rays to the food stalls serving tourists, it’s also time that fishermen cheerfully come back after one night drifting at sea. The fresh squids with watery bodies, the stout big mackerelshining the silvery color, the shrimps, king-sized crabs…are quickly transferred ashore. One open-air market is quickly formed; purchases go on so busily and joyfully. Just a short moment later, the plates of fresh cooked squid are imposed on the tables, ready to serve diners.

This may be the very last images of this land, since in a very near future, Bai Goc will see the formation of a so much monumental oil and petrochemical port. Life will be surely changes, but the fishermen of the land will always be nostalgic of this so much beautiful time.

Pristine Hon Seo Island: ideal destination for explorers

Hon Seo, which when seen from the mainland resembles a huge ship sailing to shore, is a wild oasis with feral plants, cliffs, various wild sea creatures and birds.

As a beautiful uninhabited island, Hon Seo Island in Binh Dinh province is an ideal destination for those who want to explore the sea and island, see colourful pebbles on the beach, cross large rocks, take a dive, go fishing, and enjoy freshly-caught seafood. Located off the Phuong Mai Peninsula in Nhon Ly commune, about 15km northeast of Quy Nhon city, Hon Seo Island is famous for its pristine beauty.

Hon Seo, which when seen from the mainland resembles a huge ship sailing to shore, is a wild oasis with feral plants, cliffs, various wild sea creatures and birds. In order to explore Hon Seo, you can use boat services of tourism companies or hire fishing boats from fishermen at Nhon Ly. If starting from Nhon Ly Beach, your boat will pass through the Wind Strait (Eo Gio) to Yen (swallow) Island.

It will take you 20 minutes to get to Hon Seo. But if you depart from Quy Nhon port, it will take you more than an hour to get there. The first impression when you reach the island is clear water. You can see strange coral reefs and colourful fish of different kinds swimming in water. Around the island, there are large and small rocks piled up, and you may want to climb them to view the sea.

One of the most interesting things about this island is a long stretch of colourful pebble stones. Colourful fist-shaped pebbles, eroded by the action of ocean waves over the years, become round and smooth. Beautiful pebbles are so attractive that most visitors want to take them home as pretty souvenirs. Some even bring them home to decorate houses or make a rock-garden. About 10 metres from the pebble stretch toward the foot of the mountain, there is a huge natural stone cave.
The cool atmosphere and its capacity of accommodating hundreds of people make this cave an ideal stop for tourists. From the top of Hon Seo, you can feel and see the high sky and the wide sea. On the left-hand side of the sea, there are the Phuong Mai Mountains jutting out, while you can see the Wind Strait, Yen Island and long sand dunes far away on the right-hand side. The combination of the Wind Strait, Yen Island and the Phuong Mai Peninsula looks like a huge pair of arms to embrace the island.

You feel fantastic while standing there, breathing cool, fresh air from the sea. Especially, sunrise or sunset is the most beautiful time to go sightseeing in Hon Seo. Hon Seo is a wonderful travel spot for adventure tours. You may go camping, rock climbing, sightseeing or fishing, and then cook and enjoy what you just caught. If you want to catch fish, you should go to the island in the morning, prepare some fishing rods and bait. Sometimes, you may catch big fish, if you’re lucky. You can also join local fishermen to experience fishing foreel or big fish, and then cook and eat them as a reward for successful fishing, as the locals usually do.

The northern coast of Vietnam

Although largely devoid of beaches, Vietnam’s northern coast boasts one of the country’s foremost attractions, and one of the most vaunted spots in all of Southeast Asia – the mystical scenery of Halong Bay, where jagged emerald islands jut out of the sea in their thousands. Heading in by boat, you approach wave after wave of hidden bays, needle-sharp ridges and cliffs of ribbed limestone.

The waters here are patrolled by squadrons of attractive, old-fashioned tourist junks, on which you’ll be able to spend a night at sea; wonderful Cat Ba island is another great place to stay. You’ll find similar karst scenery inland around the small city of Ninh Binh, while other notable sights in the area are the colonial buildings of Hai Phong and the caves around Dong Hoi.

The northern coast stretches all the way from the DMZ to the Chinese border. Heading north from the DMZ (the Demilitarized Zone) the first stretch is hemmed in by the jagged Truong Son Mountains, which separate Vietnam from Laos.
Here, Vietnam shrinks to a mere 50km wide and is edged with sand dunes up to 80m high, marching inland at a rate of 10m per year despite efforts to stabilize them with screw-pine and cactus.

The first place of note on this stretch is Dong Hoi, a largely uninteresting city, but one that serves as a jump-off point for the spectacular cave of Phong Nha. This was regarded as the largest cave in the land, until another was discovered nearby – Son Doong cave, yet to be fully charted but already held to be the largest in the world.

The area north of Dong Hoi is one of the poorest in Vietnam, and has little to detain the traveller; however, the mountains brushing the Lao border are home to a number of unique animal species, including the elusive saola ox and the more numerous giant muntjac deer.

The only place that sees travellers in any number is Vinh, another rather dull place, but a logical stopover on this long stretch; you may care to track down Ho Chi Minh’s birthplace in the nearby village of Kim Lien.

Despite the presence of these attractions, the vast majority of tourists make a bee-line from Hue to Ninh Binh. This is yet another unattractive northern city, but such is the wealth of nearby sights that visitors tend to stay for at least a couple of days; said attractions include majestic karst scenery, underground rivers that can be paddled through by boat, an ancient capital city and Vietnam’s largest temple complex.

From Ninh Binh, most travellers push straight on north to Hanoi. However, it’s quite possible to head directly from here towards Halong Bay, via the buzzing city of Hai Phong – one of the largest in Vietnam, and infinitely more appealing than most northern cities thanks to great colonial-era architecture and a young, friendly populace.

Then, of course, there’s Halong Bay itself. A doyen of local tourist literature, you’ll most likely have seen dozens of images of this unbelievably scenic place long before your arrival – happily, it really is that pretty. Vietnam tourism now rivals fishing as the prime activity, but the bay retains a certain authenticity, and its generous proportions are enough to swallow up the hordes or visitors, for the time being.

Many overnight aboard a traditional wooden junk; their tea-coloured sails are just for show since almost all vessels are motor-driven, but there’s a timeless, romantic air to floating amongst pristine moonlit peaks. By far the largest island in the bay, the wonderful Cat Ba makes an appealing base for exploring the area with some fine scenery as well as being home to Cat Ba National Park, a forest and maritime reserve that requires the usual mix of luck and dedication to see anything larger than a mosquito.

Phu Quoc sim wine big hit with tourists

Ruou sim (wine made from sim fruit or Rose Myrtle) is popular with the many tourists visiting Phu Quoc Island as it delivers a fragrance and sour taste similar to cocktails. However, the man who made the beverage is completely unknown.

Mac Van Nghiem was born in the Mekong Delta province of Vinh Long. He lived with his grandfather who helped inspire the young boy to make new varieties of drinks. His first two drinks were made from banana and glutinous rice.

In 1945 his aunt’s husband, a fish sauce seller, took him to Phu Quoc to reunite him with his aunt but the man died of cholera in Ha Tien on the long voyage to the island. So the young Nghiem suffered a tough life without an adult’s protection as he had to work as a firstly a porter at a fish sauce factory and then as a fisherman.

Then, he joined the revolution against the French and lived in the forest where he had gained a reputation for his talent of making wine from acerola fruits, banana and glutinous rice.

After the war, he was head of the financial committee of Phu Quoc Island and retired in 1990. A chance meeting with an officer from HCMC who came to visit the island inspired him to try to make sim wine.

The officer told Nghiem about a recipe on how to make this drink from ethnic minority people in the Central Highlands. After three months of experiments, the first batch of sim wine came out and received great response from Nghiem’s colleagues and friends.

The wine, which is below 15% proof, is suitable for people of all ages.

As the numbers of customers were rising to crazy levels, he decided to start a business out of making sim wine.

He opened a factory and hired workers to speed up the capacity and to answer the high demands of customers.
Nghiem used thousands of sim fruits annually.

However, he was starting to suffer as other rivals imitated his wine and they registered for trade marks to lure customers. Finally, he received support from the chamber of economy and culture to acknowledge him as the creator of sim wine with the registration wine brand named Bay Gao. The wine’s name originates from a love of this wine so its taste delivers customers both the passion and honestly of the true love of one man.

Last year, sim wine of Phu Quoc was voted into the Top 10 most unique wines in Vietnam by the Vietnam Record Books (Vietking).

Nghiem is now 88 but he looks much younger. His youngest son has followed him into the sim wine business to preserve the family’s tradition and his father’s recipe. Apparently the area of sim forest may be narrowed down for construction, however Nghiem said that the local authority has plans to preserve this tree for many years and many factories on the island have planted more trees to maintain the survival of Phu Quoc’s sim wine.

Wonderful Scenery on Ly Son Island - Quang Ngai

Only a few people know that Ly Son Island in Quang Ngai Province in Central Vietnam was d from five extinct volcanoes during the prehistoric age. With wonderful scenery left by these volcanoes, the island has now become an alluring destination, attracting a large number of tourists.

Seen from the shore on a fine day, Ly Son Island looks like a pyramid on the sea with its top being the peak of Thoi Loi Mountain. Among five mountains founding on the island, Thoi Loi is a rocky one. After a long time climbing the tortuous path on the mountain, tourists reach the peak of Thoi Loi where they have a panoramic view of the garlic field that looks like a chess-board and an immense blue sea dotted with fishing boats in the distance.

According to the old people in Ly Son, the hollow of the extinct Thoi Son Volcano was formerly a primitive forest of different valuable trees and had abundant fresh water resources which ran at the foot of the mountain to form Chinh Stream. Then, the forest was totally destroyed and the stream no longer exists. So far, there is only a relic left – Hang (Cave) Pagoda. Due to the sea’s impact on geology for hundreds of years, the layers of rock have been eroded and have formed a cave in the shape of a pagoda.

Unlike Thoi Loi Mountain that has only rocks, Gieng Tien Mountain has a special fertile soil, similar to the Bazan soil in Tay Nguyen (the Central Highlands). The locals often use this soil and sand to fertilize the garlic fields. Thanks to these fertilizers, the variety of garlic grown in Ly Son has a special flavour that is hardly known in other places. Around the crater of Gieng Tien Mountain that is smaller than that of Thoi Loi Mountain is a piece of land where no plants can grow. According to the beliefs of the locals, it is the sacred oil that was used as ash on the graves of soldiers of Kiem Quan Bac Hai Squad who laid down their lives when protecting the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands during the reign of King Minh Mang (1791-1841)

To the east of Gieng Tien Mountain is a strange pagoda, called Duc by locals. Visiting the pagoda, tourists learn a story about the Goddess of Mercy who traveled on Bac Hai Sea to save fishermen in distress. Seeing fishing boats being sunk by storms, she tore her robe into thousands of pieces and threw them into the sea. These pieces of cloth turned into dolphins which saved fishermen on the sea. Due to their belief, the locals made a statue of the Goddess of Mercy, 27m high, facing the sea and placed it at the pagoda with the hope that the Goddess of Mercy will protect fishermen when they go to the sea.
Although the relic of three extinct volcanoes is only small mounds, the presence of cold lava is seen in many places on Ly Son Island, forming a wonderful landscape. They are rocks in different shapes that leave a long-lasting impression on tourists to the island.
